Bunty

Bunty is the son of the famous Machali’s second litter. His father was called ‘Big Daddy’ or 'X male.' Now in his prime at 7-years-old, Bunty caused much controversy when he was fitted with a radio collar that then promptly fell off, causing a media storm that the park had lost him under their noses.

Tourism photos and our very own Aditya Singh’s investigations and comparison photos worked out that Bunty was still alive and living in the Thumka area of the park. A triumph for tourists’ photographic help in solving a riddle.

Age: 10 years old (adult)
Code: T3
First seen: March 2005
Gender: Male
Notable marks: unknown

The son of Machali - Queen of Ranthambhore - Bunty grew up in the prime lakes area of the park with his sister Bubbly (T1). In 2005, the conservation community was shocked by the death of all the tigers in the nearby Sariska Tiger reserve. It was agreed that Ranthambhore would supply the tigers to restock the park. It took a couple of years for Sariska's tiger population to be replenished.

In the meantime Bunty and his sister - both easy to find and follow - were promptly radio collared in order to relocate them to Sariska. In 2008, T10, the Chiroli male was moved by helicopter before Bunty’s sister Bubbly was relocated soon after. Four more tigers were moved over the next two years. Sadly there have been no cubs born in Sariska yet.

Bunty himself had by this time lost his collar and the media was quick to criticize his supposed demise. However, he had in fact found his own territory in the Thumka area, in the north eastern part of the park, outside the tourism zone. Tiger Nation's contributor Aditya Singh used painstaking photographic analysis to determine that the unidentified tiger was in fact, Bunty.

He was most recently seen in June 2012.

Sriram | about 1 month ago

Yes She is Sariska now BUT now she is known by the name of "ST2"

hemraj | about 3 years ago

Is she still in Sariska, the female?

Aishwarya | about 3 years ago

They were initially called Bahadur (which means brave - for the male) and Sharmelee (or Shy for the female). At that time there was this popular Bollywood film called "Bunty and Bubbly" and some people started calling them that. Still later they were given codes T3 (for the male) and T 1 (for the female). When the female was relocated to Sariska she was renumbered as ST1. Confused? I surely am :)

Oh, I saw on National Geographic that Bunty and Bubbly are actually called Bahadur and Sharmelee.

Aishwarya | about 3 years ago

Its possible, but he is the third litter of Machali's with Bunty and his sister Bubbly (T1). Aditya may well be able to enlighten.
